NEEDS SCHOOL SUPPY DRIVE

“The pantry is very low on bags,” the email from Jackie Cutshall notes in bold letters, “both paper and plastic. Bring any that you have.” What does this tell you about our local food pantry the North East Emergency Distribution Service (NEEDS)? Ms. Cutshall, pantry Co-Director, will tell you that it means there are many hungry families who depend on NEEDS and not only does the pantry provide the food but it also must find ways to transport the canned goods to homes - which explains the great demand for bags.

Providing a local food pantry is only one of the many tasks of NEEDS. Another objective of the NEEDS board is to make certain that, prior to the start of the school year, underprivileged students in the northeast quadrant of Hamilton County receive school supplies. Annually, in August, the board and multitudes of volunteers gather at the Kenwood Baptist Church to conquer the momentous task of organizing school supplies to be distributed to local schools. The districts that receive the supplies are Princeton, Sycamore, Madeira and Deer Park Schools along with any private school within those borders.

School nurses in these districts notify NEEDS with a count of indigent children as well as the list of required school supplies. From these lists community groups and churches are assigned specific items. A majority of the donated supplies are new and from the following 17 area churches: Ascension Lutheran, Blue Ash Presbyterian, Church of the Savior UMC, Good Shepherd Lutheran, Hartzell United Methodist, Kenwood Baptist Church, Kenwood Fellowship, Madeira/Silverwood Presbyterian, Montgomery Community Church, Sharonville UMC, St. Savior Catholic, St. Barnabas, St. John (Deer Park), St. Michaels Catholic, St. Paul UMC, Sycamore Presbyterian, Trinity Community as well as Montgomery Woman’s Club,

This year the NEEDS School Supply Drive will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd at the Kenwood Baptist Church, 8341 Kenwood Road, 45236. If you, your community group, or church is interested in donating please contact Bev Busemeyer, dbusemeyer2@cinci.rr.com, or Ann Barfels, abarfels@cinci.rr.com.  Truly for those who know the pleasure of purchasing school supplies for your own children, please consider helping those who are unable to buy for theirs by making a donation (monetary or otherwise) to NEEDS. Currently the pantry is also low on jelly, pasta sauce, peas, prepared foods and cereal.

It is the mission of the Northeast Emergency Distribution Service (NEEDS) to provide emergency assistance to the neediest families in the Northeast Cincinnati community.  In addition to canned goods and non-perishables, community members can also support NEEDS monetarily by sending checks to:  NEEDS, 8341 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45236.

NEEDS is a community of 25 churches and civic organizations whose mission is to do God’s work through caring for their neighbors by providing basic emergency assistance.  NEEDS is an all-volunteer cooperative located in the Kenwood Baptist Church. NEEDS does not receive government support.  The NEEDS board oversees an active foodbank, supports local students with supply and clothing drives as well as offering neighbors-in-need with housing and utility payment assistance.  NEEDS serves more than 2,500 people in northeastern Hamilton County.

The NEEDS food pantry is located at the Kenwood Baptist Church, 8341 Kenwood Road, 45236 and is open Tuesday and Thursdays from 9 am – 1 pm.  Donations of canned goods and other items are always accepted at the NEEDS food pantry. Monetary gifts can be mailed to: NEEDS, 8341 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45236. For pick-up of donated items or to ask questions please call (513) 891-0850 (NEEDS) or checkout NEEDS website: http://www.cincyneeds.org/
